As the Perth summer approaches festivities have begun. My weekend had rolled from Friday night work drinks to a Saturday night house warming to the ultimate recovery meal, the Sunday morning brunch. Thankfully we live within easy walking distance of the emerging brunch capital of Perth around the corner of Lake and Brisbane St Northbridge. Sparked a couple of years ago by the arrival of Sayers Sister and pushed to another level by the new kid on the block “Lay-up”.
Despite the name there is no further basketball reference inside, no Air Jordan poster or cheesy meal titles like the “Hot Steph Curry”. Instead the decor is on point with concrete floors, Edison globes and classy industrial/recycled finishes. We took the last table at the peak of the Sunday rush and despite the crowd there was a relaxed and welcoming feel. The staff feel more like a group of good friends than a group of employees. They are clearly happy to be there even on a Sunday morning with an obvious goal of trying to make everyone in the room as happy as they are. Almost immediately on taking our seat they had the all important coffee and water in front of us so caffeinated and hydrated we could make a sensible choice from the Lay-up menu.
Lay-up make it clear that brunch is not breakfast with a range of options from very brekky-centric egg options to a soba noodle and salmon or beef and pearl barley. At around 10.30am I had just woken up so went for the “Deep Fried Hash” with Poached Egg. Michelle had already finished the “Walk 4 Brain Cancer” charity walk and was ready for the lunch-esque “Huevos Rancheros”.
